Cruise Industry Discounts FAQ

Can anyone become a travel agent just to get cruise discounts?

Lines increasingly look for real selling activity, recent bookings and current credentials before offering agent rates. Start with the selling; the travel benefits follow active agents.

Do travel agents get free cruises?

Rarely free. Agents may be offered reduced rates, hosted FAM sailings or training sailings, and group organisers may earn tour conductor credits. Taxes, fees and gratuities usually still apply.

Do agent discounts apply to river cruises?

Some river lines and tour operators offer advisor rates too, under their own terms. Check each company’s agent site.

How do I prove I am a travel agent to a cruise line?

With an accepted industry ID such as the IATA/IATAN card or CLIA EMBARC ID, registration on the line’s agent portal, and, where required, a booking history or a confirmation from your agency.

Can retirees from an airline get interline cruise discounts?

Some lines include retirees. Royal Caribbean, for example, accepts a retiree ID badge or a letter from the former employer as proof.

Can my spouse travel with me on an agent rate?

Often, but the rules differ. Some lines allow a companion in the same cabin at the agent rate, some charge a different rate, and some exclude companions on certain offers. Read the offer terms before booking.

Are agent rates available on every sailing?

No. Agent rates are usually limited to selected sailings and are often confirmed on a space-available basis, sometimes close to departure. Popular holiday and peak sailings are the least likely to be offered.

Do I lose agent-rate eligibility if I change host agencies?

You may need to update your profile with the line and show current credentials from your new agency. Tell the lines you sell as soon as you move, and keep your booking history records.

What is the difference between an agent rate and a FAM?

An agent rate is a reduced fare you book for your own learning travel; a FAM is a trip planned and hosted by a supplier, usually with a fixed program. Sell and Sail compares the two in detail.

Does Cruise Industry Discounts sell cruises?

No. It is an independent guide in the Smart Traveler network. Travelers can request a quote from our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise through the Official Cruise Directory quote form.

A Note on Accuracy

Industry rate programs change often and are published mainly on password-protected agent sites. This guide describes how they generally work and quotes only rules that are published openly, with the date they were checked. Before booking, always read the current terms from the cruise line or credential body itself.

Not in the travel industry? Our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise can still find the best fare you qualify for: request a quote through the Official Cruise Directory quote form.
